A full-time position, teaching-oriented, in Applied Mathematics & Data Science at Associate professor level


To participate to the development of its programs, emlyon business school is seeking highly motivated candidates, who demonstrate pedagogical excellence in Applied mathematics and data science. Applications are invited at associate professor level, primary focus on teaching, beginning full time in September 2023.


The selected candidate is expected to teach in French as well as in English. Teaching opportunities will be focused at the undergraduate (BBA), “Programme Grande Ecole (PGE)” and Master of Science (MSc in) levels. Responsibilities for this position include capabilities to design and manage courses in Applied mathematics and data science approaches, tools and methods and potentially coordinate a network of professional lecturers. Conducting communications in professional and/or academic journals is another requirement of this position.


The selected candidate will closely collaborate with our existing team of professors and researchers in the school's ODAI (Operations, Data & Artificial intelligence) department,


Teaching will be delivered principally in Lyon/Ecully campus but can also be delivered in other emlyon's campuses (St-Etienne - Paris).

We are looking for candidates with the following qualifications in line with their level of application:

  • Phd / doctorate degree in a discipline linked to applied mathematics or data science: statistics, machine learning, data visualization, or any related area,
  • Evidence of excellent teaching achievements in French, (and English) at different levels (undergraduate, masters, executive) demonstrated by proven teaching experience in applied mathematics for any management areas (e.g., operations, marketing, finance, economics), as well as data science methods and tools (data analysis, data management, etc),
  • Ability to merge theoretical knowledge with practical relevance and to build and manage relationships with practitioners (e.g. company-oriented research projects),
  • Desire to collaborate in a collegial and dynamic pedagogical and research team,
  • Desire and ability to support junior level researchers and supervise doctoral students,
  • Even if this position is a teaching-oriented position, some research contributions are also a requirement, demonstrated by capacity to publish in the management journals in their respective research field (e.g., FT list), as well as professional communications,
  • Willingness to travel among our other French campuses (Paris, St. Etienne)

The candidate will be expected to contribute to and is regularly evaluated based on three areas of activities: (1) teaching and student supervision, (2) institutional service (e.g. administration, service in committees, representation of the school in the media and events), and (3) research contributions.

The position involves teaching mostly in English and potentially French at all levels. Speaking French is not a requirement but holding French basic notions will be an asset. For non-French professors basic language support is offered at emlyon
