A full-time research position in Data Science / Associate level


emlyon business school is opening a full-time associate professor in data science position with a research track profile. The selected candidate will join the Operations, Data science and AI research group.

Starting date: September 2019

Research: The candidate must hold a PhD in computer science, mathematics/statistics, or engineering, and have postdoctoral experience. The candidate must show interest in interdisciplinary collaborations with applied sciences (e.g. quantitative marketing, finance, quantitative/computational social sciences, neuroscience etc.) and relevance of his/her quantitative profile for research applied to business studies. The selected candidate will join a team of researchers working in operation research, big data & machine learning, computational social sciences, IoT, network science, and agent-based modeling. S/he will work in collaboration both on business applications with researchers from emlyon business school, and on AI with colleagues from university labs (through PhDs supervisions for instance).

Teaching: the teaching duties are function of the research publication outcome.

The selected candidate will actively participate in the school strategic move to heighten its scientific and AI education. emlyon business school aims at educating “early makers”, and in particular new managers profiles with a concrete understanding of AI and data science, and a real know-how of data analysis. The candidate is expected to have outstanding outreach teaching abilities, to make technicalities, advanced technologies, and mathematics accessible to business students (which have typically 2-years of calculus and elementary coding skills).

Classes to teach include: r and python coding, python data analysis, applied statistics, text-mining, machine learning, big data in practice, deep learning, web database programming, data analysis in practice, etc.

Technical coding and data science expertise needed: the candidate should ideally have a strong experience in

  1. Python coding: numpy, scipy, etc
  2. R-coding: tidyverse, shiny, etc
  3. Python data analysis: pandas, scikit-learn, etc
  4. Deep learning: tensorflow, keras, and/or pytorch
  5. Big data: hadoop, spark
  6. Data visualization
  7. Text mining
